SF Flex Academy joins 7th Ave School Site

5923281ISPN President Martha Ehrenfeld interviewed Megan Hugel, academic coach/operations coordinator about our new neighbors on 7th Ave.

SF Flex is a full-time, tuition-free, public charter school, serving students in grades 9-12 from anywhere in the Bay Area blending the best of a rigorous, college-preparatory, comprehensive high school environment with on-line curriculum. The 7th Ave building is their third location in San Francisco.

What is the typical student that attends Flex Academy?

Students come to SF Flex for a variety of reasons, but primarily because they are looking for something different than the traditional educational system. Typical students are those looking for a tight knit community, small class sizes, personalized learning and academic rigor. Our students are motivated, passionate, respectfully outspoken individuals who want an alternative to traditional methods of learning. Due to small size they are able to receive both additional remedial as well as advanced support and classes they may not otherwise have been able to access. Our students are also young adults who want the flexibility of blended learning with the community we provide through advisory, clubs, sports and school events.

Our enrollment is still open for the 2014-2015 school year so please contact us at 415-762-8800 or email our Enrollment Coordinator, Sean St. Denny at sst.denny@sfflex.org for more information!

How is the building being used, do students come to the building on a regular basis?

SF Flex students attend school five days a week from 8:45-3:45pm. We share the cafeteria, library and outdoor space with Independence, but each school has its own individual classrooms. Modified schedules are available for students with extenuating circumstances.

What happened to Independence High School?

1350 7th Avenue is a shared building so Independence High School is still here and running their full program.

Will the schoolyard still be open for the neighborhood during the weekends?

Yes.

How can the neighborhood be a good partner to the school?

This is San Francisco Flex Academy’s third location and we have loved getting to know every community we have been a part of. Currently we are piloting an internship program and looking for local organizations that would like to support high school interns. We also are always looking for community service opportunities or after school programs our students can attend to widen their high school experience.
