Spring Cleaning and Greening in the Inner Sunset

The Inner Sunset benefited from three special events this March.  On Saturday March  15th,  volunteers worked alongside SF Department of Public Works Greg Townsend to weed, plant, pick up trash, scrape off stickers and remove graffiti in the Farmers Market Parking Lot off 9th Ave.  We want to thank La Boulange @ Sunset for providing us with coffee and treats and Craig Dawson on Mt Sutro Stewards for proving us with plants.IMG_2892

IMG_2621Two Saturdays later, on March 22, just after the Spring Equinox, Markos Major from Climate Action Now led many neighbors and members of the Independence High School community on a greening project.  Funded by a grant from Public Utilities Commission to create rainwater catch basins, volunteers planted native plants, created gardens for vegetables and weeded invasive plants from large bank along 7th Ave just south of the public parking lot.   We thank all the volunteers came for four hours on the beautiful Saturday.  We would like to thank Arizmendi Bakery for fueling us with delicious baked goods.

Stop by the schoolyard, open to the public every Saturday and Sunday to see the Middle East Peace Garden along the 6th Ave side.   Volunteers planted an olive tree, a grape vine, a fig trees and a pomegranate sapling—all native to the Middle East.  Large tree ring seats have been added to all the gardens.  We hope you will enjoy the new green spot in the Inner Sunset. IMG_2610

March 22nd also was day the community celebrated the grand renovation of Kezar Triangle.  If you have not made your way over there, you will be amazed by the new paths, exciting organic artwork and a fresh, clean look to the whole area.  Supervisor London Breed alongside Matt O’Grady, SF Park Alliance, Park & Rec. Commissioner Mark Buell, and Phil Ginsburg, General Manager along with other dignitaries were present at the celebration. DSCF0061

If you are interested in getting more involved in these kind of projects, look for events via our newsletter, Facebook page and community bulletin board on 9th Ave by the N-Judah inbound stop.  ISPN is a 100% volunteer organization and we are always looking for project leaders and creators.
