What would your intersection look like if it were turned into a giant painted mural?
Believe it or not, intersection murals have been an officially-sanctioned practice in other cities – most famously Portland, Oregon – for many years. The results speak for themselves. See the image to the right – there are many more examples here.
Intersection murals are a fantastic way for neighbors to come together and build community but also, amazingly, they often lower vehicle speeds and reduce crime.
Walk SF is working with the City to pilot an intersection painting program here and they are looking for interested neighbors. Appropriate intersections would have a reasonable, but not too high, level of traffic so consider this question carefully. This document goes into more detail about the program.
