Update on Irving Street Construction

digging irving street
WEEKEND WORK – Saturday August 25, 2018
SF Water Department in coordination with Public Works and our contractor Mitchell Engineering will be performing water service connections that will impact addresses between 9th and 10th Avenue on Irving. This will interrupt water service for approximately 30-minutes.  Water department crews will reach out to businesses and residents individually on Saturday morning to coordinate suitable times, likely completing the retail connections before the start of the business day.
Below you will find our weekly construction 3-week look-ahead schedule to help you plan around construction.  These will be updated bi-weekly.  Please feel free to share and distribute to your lists, friends and neighbors.

I am always happy to hear from residents and merchants with suggestions for improvements and any concerns you may have. If you do not see your location listed below, this means we do not plan to have crews working there for the next 3-4 weeks. Please call if you have specific questions about our schedule as it pertains to your block.
We have received a few calls pertaining to vibrations felt while performing our sewer replacement work.  The vibrations are felt in the beginning stages of our work, generally the first couple of days, while we are opening up the ground and shoring up the sides of the trenches.  Open sewer replacement requires us to dig a minimum 10 foot trench to expose the sewer pipes.  These trench-walls have to be reinforced with steel plates along the sides to prevent the dirt/sand from shifting and collapsing on our workers.  The process of inserting the steel walls involves a lot of pounding to drive them into the soil.  It is loud and can sometimes be felt inside of your private homes and businesses.  Please know this is normal, particular in the sunset area due to the soil composition.  The noise and vibrations are temporary and should last no more than a few days until the contractor completes the installation and moves on down the corridor.

For Your Information
There may be noticeable noise, vibration, dust, parking and traffic impacts in the work zone and disruption to normal neighborhood activity.
Residents and businesses on the blocks where sewer-lining is occurring may detect a faint chemical nail-polish like odor from the lining process.  You should know it is not harmful and will dissipate in a few hours
